Muir Glen Organic and FOOD & WINE are pleased to announce Melanie Smith of Topeka, KS, as the 2010 Muir Glen Exceptional Tomato Recipe contest winner. Smith's Fire Roasted-Basil Tomato Crab Bisque recipe exemplified the importance of using high-quality tomatoes and secured her a trip for two to the FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen, Colorado, June 19-21.
Tomatoes infuse food with vine ripened freshness and transform ordinary dishes into extraordinary fare and that is what Smith's creation has done. Her winning recipe combined flavorful ingredients including Muir Glen Organic Fire Roasted tomatoes, chicken stock, fresh herbs and lump crab meat.

"We tried many wonderful recipes and it was difficult to select a winner," said Muir Glen Marketing Manager, Michelle Kopp. "We were very pleased with the winning recipe for its creativity and use of ingredients."
When asked what the inspiration was for her recipe, Smith said, "when my husband and I went on our first date in the summer of 1999, we ordered a 'Tomato-Basil Crab Bisque' from the menu. It was the best soup I ever tasted. The tomatoes in that bisque were so bright, so fresh looking, not like you'd imagine in a tomato soup. So I set out to re-create the taste that marked our special beginning. This June, we will be celebrating our ten-year anniversary, along with our three children."
